Indias Coal Production from Captive and Commercial Mines Sees 9.6% Increase in July

New Delhi, August 3: India’s coal production from captive and commercial mines rose by 9.6% year-on-year in July, reaching 14.78 million tons (MT). This information was released by the Ministry of Coal on Monday.

During this period, coal supply from these mines reached 17.49 million tons.

The Ministry’s statement highlighted, “This encouraging performance reflects improvements in operational efficiency, increased mining productivity, and more effective utilization of mining capacities in the captive and commercial coal mining sector.”

Government data indicates that cumulative production from captive and commercial mines from the start of the current fiscal year until July totaled 63.16 million tons, which is a 6.2% increase compared to 59.42 million tons during the same period last year.

Additionally, cumulative coal supply from the beginning of the fiscal year until July stood at 70.14 million tons, marking a 5.8% rise from 66.02 million tons in the previous fiscal year.

According to the Ministry’s statement, the continuous increase in production from captive and commercial mines is expected to reduce dependence on imported coal. This will strengthen the supply chain, save foreign currency, and enhance self-reliance in critical raw materials necessary for the country’s energy security and industrial development. This aligns with the government’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).

Furthermore, the Ministry is committed to fully harnessing the potential of the captive and commercial coal mining sector. Through progressive policy initiatives, robust regulatory oversight, and ongoing stakeholder support, the Ministry aims to ensure production growth, eliminate supply-related barriers, and improve coal availability. It will also ensure that the coal sector continues to play a vital role in meeting the country’s growing energy and industrial needs.
