Tensions Rise in Manipur as Crowd Sets NSCN-IM Office Ablaze

Imphal, March 30: Tensions escalated in Manipur’s Ukhrul district when a crowd set fire to the NSCN-IM office on Sunday. This incident has heightened unrest in the area.

A police officer in Imphal reported that an angry mob targeted the NSCN-IM’s Wung regional office. The incident occurred in response to the alleged shooting of four cadres by members of an opposing group in the nearby Kamjong district on Saturday.

Following the news of the killings, tensions surged in both Ukhrul and Kamjong districts starting Sunday morning. Ukhrul has experienced repeated unrest and shares an interstate border with Nagaland, as well as an international border with Myanmar. Kamjong district also has un-fenced areas along the Myanmar border.

The officer stated that the furious crowd accused NSCN-IM members of being involved in the murders of the four cadres and demanded immediate action against those responsible.

During the confrontation, the crowd set fire to the office. Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties. Sources from NSCN-IM indicated that no directives have been issued from the headquarters regarding action against any group or individual.

The organization has initiated an internal investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the murders and the subsequent violence.

According to officials, members of an opposing group shot four cadres in Hongbei village of Kamjong district on Saturday. Reports suggest that the attackers intercepted a vehicle carrying six cadres and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of four on the spot, while two others managed to escape. A police team arrived in the area on Sunday to recover the bodies.

Meanwhile, a delegation from civil society organizations in Ukhrul met with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh at the secretariat to discuss the situation in Ukhrul and Kamjong districts with the state’s Home Minister, Konthoujam Govindas Singh.

In a Facebook post, Chief Minister Biren Singh mentioned that he met with the delegation from Ukhrul CSOs along with the Home Minister and legislators to address the current unrest, tensions, and ongoing development concerns in the district.
