Telangana Governor Appoints Azharuddin and Kodandaram as MLCs

Hyderabad, April 26: Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has appointed Mohammad Azharuddin and Professor M. Kodandaram as members of the Telangana Legislative Council from the Governor’s quota. This decision was made on Sunday.

However, according to the notification issued by the state government, these appointments are subject to the final decision on all pending appeals related to this matter.

The notification states that Azharuddin and Kodandaram have been appointed in place of D. Rajeshwar Rao and Farooq Hussain, whose terms ended on May 27, 2023.

Azharuddin’s appointment as MLC brings significant relief to the former Indian cricket captain and the ruling Congress party. He must be elected to the Assembly or the Council by April 30 to remain in the cabinet, having taken the oath of office as a minister on October 31, 2025.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy met with the Governor on April 19, requesting approval for the pending nominations of minority welfare minister Mohammad Azharuddin and Professor Kodandaram under the Governor’s quota.

On August 30, 2025, the Telangana cabinet recommended the names of Azharuddin and Kodandaram for nomination to the council under the Governor’s quota. Last month, the Chief Minister expressed confidence that the Governor would approve their nominations.

He noted that the Supreme Court had recently raised no objections regarding this matter, allowing the state government to seek the Governor’s approval freely.

Last August, the cabinet’s decision to nominate him as MLC came two weeks after the Supreme Court stayed the appointments of Kodandaram and Amir Ali Khan as MLCs under the Governor’s quota. Both Kodandaram and Amir Ali Khan took their oaths as MLCs in 2024. The Supreme Court had stayed a petition challenging the nominations made by the state government, filed by leaders Dasoju Sravan and Kurra Satyanarayana of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

The petitioners challenged these appointments on the grounds that they violated the Supreme Court’s interim orders. The Supreme Court deemed the oath-taking inappropriate following the interim orders and clarified that any appointment made under the Governor’s quota would be subject to the outcome of ongoing legal proceedings.

After the state cabinet resubmitted the recommendation to the Governor in August 2024, both Kodandaram and Amir Ali Khan were appointed to the council under the Governor’s quota.
