New Delhi, August 25: In response to the increasing cases of swine flu in the national capital, the Directorate of Education (DOE) issued an advisory on Tuesday for all government, government-aided, and private unaided recognized schools.
The advisory urges schools to enhance health awareness and respiratory hygiene practices among students and staff. Delhi’s Education Minister Atishi has appealed to citizens not to panic.
The DOE’s advisory emphasizes that there is no need for unnecessary fear, but timely information and responsible preventive measures are essential, especially in school environments.
All schools are encouraged to adopt the “Healthy School – Healthy Community” approach. This includes promoting respiratory hygiene and hand cleanliness, such as covering the nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing, disposing of tissues properly, and regularly washing hands with soap and water—particularly before meals and after coughing or sneezing.
Schools are also instructed to maintain a safe distance from individuals showing symptoms of respiratory illness to prevent the spread of infection. The advisory states, “Masks may be used if necessary.”
Additionally, schools are advised to regularly clean classrooms, common areas, and frequently touched surfaces, while ensuring good ventilation wherever possible. There is also a call to raise awareness against spitting in school premises or public areas.
Schools should promote adequate hydration, nutritious food, sufficient rest, and general personal hygiene among students and staff. Staff members are advised to avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth frequently to reduce the risk of infection.
The DOE has cautioned against taking antibiotics and other medications without a doctor’s advice. Schools are encouraged to disseminate this advisory through morning assemblies, classroom discussions, notice boards, interactions with parents, and digital platforms.
All District and Zone Education Officers (DDEs) have been directed to monitor compliance with the advisory and ensure a report is submitted by August 31.
Meanwhile, Minister Ashish Sood stated to reporters, “There is no need to panic. There is no emergency situation in the country or Delhi. However, prevention is better than treatment. The advisory emphasizes social distancing, hand washing, school cleanliness, classroom hygiene, and personal hygiene, especially for young children and students. Seasonal illnesses occur at this time of year, so it is crucial to remain aware and vigilant.”
