Chennai, June 14: In a significant political development in Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Manila Congress (Mupanar) announced its separation from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Sunday. The party stated that this decision was made to strengthen its organization and expand its independent political identity within the state.
Party president G.K. Vasan revealed this decision after an executive meeting in Chennai. He clarified that there are no ideological differences or political disputes with the BJP, AIADMK, or other NDA allies.
Vasan emphasized, “We have no disagreements with the BJP, AIADMK, or other coalition parties. This decision is solely aimed at empowering the Tamil Manila Congress as an independent political force.”
He noted that party leaders and workers believe that remaining in the alliance limits organizational activities and responsibilities at the grassroots level. Operating independently will provide the party with better opportunities to engage activists and expand its organization throughout Tamil Nadu.
However, Vasan acknowledged the significance of electoral alliances in Tamil Nadu politics. He stated, “Alliances are necessary during elections, but our current priority is to strengthen the party.”
The former Union minister also admitted that the coalition his party was part of in recent years has not achieved electoral success. In the recently concluded assembly elections, the AIADMK-led NDA finished in third place, prompting introspection among the allied parties.
Vasan assured that while the Tamil Manila Congress is leaving the NDA, it will maintain friendly relations with all coalition partners. He expressed confidence that this move will help the party regain political strength.
Notably, in 1996, senior Congress leader G.K. Mupanar founded the Tamil Manila Congress after parting ways with Congress. Following his death, the party underwent several political changes and was restructured under the leadership of his son, G.K. Vasan. This makes the Tamil Manila Congress the first ally to leave the AIADMK-led coalition after the recent assembly elections.
