Tamil Nadu to Implement Free Electricity Scheme for 1 Crore Consumers

Chennai, May 24: The Tamil Nadu government is set to launch an extended free electricity scheme for domestic consumers starting from the next billing cycle. This initiative will be activated once the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDC) completes necessary updates to its billing software to accommodate the revised policy.

This move is expected to provide relief to millions of families across the state and significantly increase the number of consumers receiving zero electricity bills.

According to an official notice issued by the accounts branch of TNPDC, field-level chief engineers have been informed about the software updates. These updates will facilitate eligibility checks, subsidy calculations, bill generation, and accounting provisions under the new scheme.

Senior officials have also been instructed to ensure that field staff are well-informed about the implementation process. This will allow eligible consumers to benefit without delay when the next billing cycle begins.

This decision marks the first major policy initiative under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s leadership. It aims to provide up to 200 units of free electricity to domestic consumers whose bimonthly consumption does not exceed 500 units.

Tamil Nadu has approximately 24.6 million domestic electricity consumers. Currently, around 6.7 million consumers using less than 100 units every two months already receive free electricity. With the expansion of the scheme to 200 units, the number of families receiving zero electricity bills is expected to rise sharply, potentially reaching about 12 million consumers.

The revised subsidy structure is also anticipated to benefit an additional 8.58 million consumers, who may see a reduction of approximately ₹235 in their electricity bills every two months starting from the next billing cycle. However, around 3.42 million consumers, whose consumption exceeds 500 units per billing cycle, will continue to receive only the existing benefit of 100 free units.

Officials reported that the software upgrade process commenced on May 10, immediately following the government’s announcement. This was done to ensure the seamless implementation of the scheme in the upcoming billing cycle.

The extended free electricity scheme is viewed as a significant welfare measure aimed at reducing household expenses, particularly for low- and middle-income families.

TNPDC officials have stated that this initiative is part of the government’s policy decision, and the financial burden of the expanded subsidy will be borne by the state government.
