Heavy Rainfall Expected in Tamil Nadu, Alert Issued for 10 Districts

Chennai, May 24: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecasted heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu due to atmospheric circulation over the southeastern Bay of Bengal and adjacent central regions. Several districts in the state are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days.

According to the weather department, heavy rainfall is likely on Sunday in ten districts, including Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, and Namakkal.

The RMC indicated that the intensity of rainfall is expected to increase over the next few days due to the current weather conditions. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted for multiple districts, including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Tiruchi, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Theni, and Madurai. This situation is likely to persist, leading to intense rainfall in many of these areas.

Officials have advised residents in sensitive and low-lying areas to remain vigilant, as heavy rainfall could lead to flooding and disrupt daily life.

The weather department also noted that on May 26, sporadic heavy rainfall is expected in the hilly regions of Coimbatore and Tiruppur, as well as in Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, and Kanyakumari districts.

Despite the forecast of rain, the maximum temperature in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry is not expected to change significantly, remaining around normal levels.

For Chennai, the forecast suggests that partial cloud cover will persist in the evening or night, with light to moderate rain likely. Intermittent showers and cloud cover are expected to make the weather relatively pleasant in the city.

Officials have particularly urged residents in hilly and flood-prone areas to keep an eye on weather updates and take necessary precautions.
