Chennai, August 26: The Tamil Nadu government has appointed ministers to closely monitor development projects across all 15 zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). This initiative aims to effectively implement welfare schemes throughout the city.
Minister Aadhav Arjun, responsible for Chennai district, will coordinate the activities of these ministers and oversee the comprehensive implementation of government programs within the corporation’s boundaries. The goal is to enhance coordination among departments, expedite citizen projects, and ensure better monitoring of plans at the zone level.
Under this new arrangement, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister Ramesh will oversee Tiruvottiyur (Zone 1) and Manali (Zone 2) in North Chennai. Information Technology and Digital Services Minister T. Lokesh will be in charge of Tamilselvan Madhavaram (Zone 3) and Tondiarpet (Zone 4).
Health, Medical Education, and Family Welfare Minister Dr. K.G. Arunraj has been assigned Royapuram (Zone 5) and Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar (Zone 6). Handlooms, Textiles, and Khadi Minister M. Vijay Balaji will manage three zones: Ambattur (Zone 7), Anna Nagar (Zone 8), and Teynampet (Zone 9), which encompass the city’s western areas and significant central regions.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Dr. T.K. Biju will supervise Kodambakkam (Zone 10) and Valasaravakkam (Zone 11). Transport Minister Vijay Tamil Parthiban is responsible for Alandur (Zone 12) and Adyar (Zone 13). Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K. Vignesh will oversee Perungudi (Zone 14) and Sholinganallur (Zone 15).
These southern zones include rapidly developing residential and commercial areas, as well as key information technology corridors.
Ministers are expected to review the progress of development works, identify causes of delays, and coordinate with GCC officials and other government departments to resolve implementation challenges. They will also ensure that welfare schemes reach eligible residents and assess the civic needs of their assigned zones.
This division across the city provides each GCC zone with a minister as a supervisor, while the district minister will maintain a central coordinating role. The government anticipates that this arrangement will enhance accountability and facilitate quicker decision-making in implementing local infrastructure, public services, and welfare schemes.
Regular reviews are expected to assist officials in addressing zone-specific issues. Additionally, the new oversight system aims to foster better coordination among state administration, the corporation, and Chennai residents.
