Tamil Nadu CM to Meet Andhra Pradesh Counterpart on Krishna Water Dispute

Chennai, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is scheduled to meet Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on October 13 in Vijayawada. The discussion will focus on the water supply from the Krishna River, proposed dams on rivers flowing into Tamil Nadu, and inter-river linkages.

This meeting comes amid ongoing concerns about the water shortages faced by Tamil Nadu under the Telugu Ganga project. According to agreements, Andhra Pradesh is required to provide 12,000 million cubic feet (TMC) of Krishna River water annually at the inter-state border. However, Tamil Nadu has received only 2.251 TMC of this allocation as of October 9 this year.

The significant gap between the designated annual supply and the amount received so far is expected to be a focal point of the discussions. This meeting will allow both governments to review water drainage and address Tamil Nadu’s needs for the remainder of the year.

Currently, Tamil Nadu has not even received one-fifth of its allocated annual share. Data indicates that the outstanding amount stands at 9.749 TMC, although the annual allocation and the amount received by October 9 pertain to different periods.

In addition to the water supply from the Krishna River, Vijay is likely to raise concerns regarding Andhra Pradesh’s plans to construct dams on rivers flowing into Tamil Nadu. The talks may also cover the impact of these projects on water availability for downstream states.

Concerns related to river interlinking and proposed structures will also be part of the discussions. The talks are expected to include existing water-sharing arrangements and proposals related to the rivers connecting both states.

Reports suggest that during this visit, Vijay will also meet with Andhra Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan and other ministers. These meetings will focus on water-related issues scheduled for discussion between the two governments. The political leadership of both states will address Tamil Nadu’s concerns regarding the shortage of Krishna River water and the proposed dam constructions.

With only a portion of the annual allocation received thus far, the upcoming talks on October 13 will emphasize how both states can address Tamil Nadu’s water-related concerns through direct consultations. The details of any decisions or commitments will depend on the outcomes of these meetings, which are part of Vijay’s visit to Vijayawada.
