Ratnagiri, November 1 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic accident occurred on the Mumbai-Goa National Highway near Anjanari Bridge in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, on Saturday night. A speeding truck transporting iron rods crashed into a vehicle belonging to the Hathkhamba traffic police unit. The collision resulted in the deaths of a police officer and the truck driver, with two other officers sustaining serious injuries.
The incident took place around 11 PM when the police vehicle was responding to reports of another car that had fallen into the river beneath the Anjanari Bridge. As they approached the scene, the container truck struck the police vehicle from behind.
The impact was so severe that the police car collided with a steep rock, causing it to plummet approximately 80 to 100 feet into the river below. The container truck also veered off the road and overturned into a ditch. The deceased were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Santosh Appasahib Gaikwad, aged 51, and the truck driver.
Initial treatment for the injured officers was administered at Pali Rural Hospital before they were transferred to Ratnagiri District Government Hospital. Unfortunately, ASI Gaikwad succumbed to his injuries during treatment, and the truck driver also died shortly thereafter.
One of the injured constables, Anil Ashok Shingade, is being moved to Sangli for advanced medical care. This tragic incident has reignited serious concerns regarding road safety near Anjanari Bridge, known for its sharp turns and steep slopes. Calls for stricter speed control measures and improved safety protocols on this accident-prone section of the highway are once again being raised.
