Supreme Court Lifts Ban on Anurag Thakur in BCCI Roles

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has lifted the ban on BJP leader and Himachal Pradesh MP Anurag Thakur from holding positions in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This decision allows him to resume official duties within the BCCI.

The restriction was originally imposed in 2017 due to non-compliance with the Lodha Committee recommendations, which included stringent rules such as age limits and restrictions on holding government office while serving in the BCCI. Anurag Thakur was removed from his position at that time.

The Supreme Court has now amended its 2017 order, permitting Thakur to participate in BCCI functions and meetings. Earlier, the Court had directed him to stay away from the internal activities of the cricket board.

When the ban was imposed, Thakur was serving as the BCCI president. The order was issued by a bench led by then Chief Justice T. S. Thakur, instructing him to refrain from involvement in BCCI affairs.

However, the current bench, headed by Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, has modified that order. They have allowed Anurag Thakur to engage in the internal, administrative, and other matters of the BCCI.

The Supreme Court clarified that the 2017 restriction was not intended to be a lifetime disqualification. The Court stated that imposing a permanent ban would not be appropriate. It also noted that Anurag Thakur had offered an unconditional apology, which the Court accepted.
