New Delhi, March 13: The Supreme Court has refused to hear a public interest petition seeking guidelines to prevent deaths caused by potholes, exposed electrical wires, and poor infrastructure on roads.
The court stated that issuing a uniform order for the entire country is not feasible. Such issues vary locally, and the petitioners are encouraged to approach the relevant High Court for their concerns.
This petition was filed by an organization named ‘JanShruti People’s Voice.’ It called for the establishment of nationwide standard procedures and guidelines to prevent fatalities from road accidents, electrical shocks from open wires, and the lack of basic infrastructure. The petitioners urged for strict policies and accountability to curb these daily incidents that claim innocent lives.
In dismissing the petition, the Supreme Court noted that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of High Courts, where local conditions can be better considered for decision-making. The court also indicated that the maintenance and safety of infrastructure primarily fall under the responsibilities of state governments, municipal bodies, and relevant departments.
This decision comes at a time when accidents caused by potholes, open manholes, and dangling electrical wires have become commonplace across the country. Several High Courts have already taken a stern stance on such matters; for instance, the Bombay High Court recently ordered compensation for deaths resulting from potholes.
