Sunil Jakhar Urges Punjab Governor to Implement Model Code of Conduct Amid Deteriorating Law and Order
Sunil Jakhar calls for the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct in Punjab to ensure fair elections amid rising lawlessness.

Chandigarh, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : BJP leader Sunil Jakhar has written to the Governor of Punjab, demanding the immediate implementation of the Model Code of Conduct in the state. In his letter, Jakhar highlighted the deteriorating law and order situation, which has been acknowledged by the Bhagwant Mann government itself.
Jakhar pointed out that the government recently denied permission for a marathon event, citing concerns over the prevailing lawlessness. He urged the Governor to intervene and recommend to the Election Commission that the Model Code be enforced swiftly, ensuring that the upcoming assembly elections can be conducted peacefully and fairly, allowing citizens to vote without fear.
In his correspondence, Jakhar noted that a drug awareness marathon has been held annually in Abohar for several years, attracting thousands of young participants. However, this year, the government refused to grant written permission, claiming that the current environment is not conducive for such events due to the worsening law and order situation.
While he opposes the current government and its policies, Jakhar acknowledged the administration’s rare admission of the grim reality regarding law enforcement in the state. He expressed concern over the alarming levels of violence, stating that no one feels safe. The drug epidemic is claiming young lives, while the drug mafia’s terror has escalated to the point where those speaking out against narcotics are being silenced with bullets.
Jakhar cited incidents of open murders across various districts, including Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Ludhiana. He condemned the government’s failure to address these issues, claiming that police are forcibly taking the bodies of drug overdose victims from their families. Those who protest against drug abuse face police repression or are driven to suicide.
He alleged that the situation has not arisen suddenly but is a result of the policies of the Aam Aadmi Party government. Senior party leader Manish Sisodia had previously stated that they would do anything to win elections, including manipulation and coercion. Jakhar accused the government of appointing favored officials while harboring gangsters and criminals within the party.
Jakhar further claimed that drug and weapon smuggling is rampant, with criminals being released on parole and fleeing abroad. He mentioned ongoing corruption cases involving sexual harassment against women and noted that the Chief Minister‘s family is implicated in a case worth 5 crore, yet the government refuses to conduct an investigation despite High Court orders.
In light of this environment, Jakhar stressed that conducting free, fair, and peaceful elections in a border state like Punjab is impossible. He called for the appointment of honest officials under the supervision of the Election Commission to ensure that elections are held fairly.
