The Unique Tale of Agroha Dham: A Prosperous City Blessed by Goddess Mahalaxmi

Explore the rich history of Agroha Dham in Hisar, a sacred site dedicated to Goddess Mahalaxmi and Maharaja Agrasen.

Hisar, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : Agroha Dham, located in Hisar, Haryana, holds a special place in the hearts of devotees, especially during the festival of Diwali when worship of Goddess Mahalaxmi takes center stage. As families flock to temples to seek blessings for prosperity, the story of Agroha Dham stands out.

This site is closely linked to the history of Maharaja Agrasen and the Agarwal community. According to tradition, Maharaja Agrasen, with the blessings of Goddess Mahalaxmi, aspired to establish a new kingdom. Accompanied by his wife, Queen Madhavi, he set out in search of a suitable location.

During their journey, they reportedly witnessed a tiger cub playing alongside wolf pups. Agrasen and Madhavi interpreted this as an auspicious sign, believing they had found a land of valor where a prosperous state could thrive. Consequently, they founded the city of Agroha, which flourished in trade and agriculture.

Over time, the historical significance of Agroha diminished, but efforts to revive its recognition continued. In 1907, a sage named Brahmanand Brahmachari arrived and inspired the Agarwal community to develop this historical site. This led to the formation of the Agarwal Darbar organization in 1908, which established a cow shelter, a Shiva temple, and 18 sacred sites.

The modern construction of Agroha Dham began in 1976 during a conference of Agarwal representatives, resulting in the creation of the Agroha Development Trust. The main temple was completed in 1984, followed by the development of additional facilities and attractions.

Agroha Dham’s temple complex is divided into three main sections. The central area houses the idol of Goddess Mahalaxmi, while the western section is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati and the eastern section to Maharaja Agrasen. Devotees can seek blessings from all three deities during their visit.

Goddess Mahalaxmi is revered as the goddess of wealth and prosperity, while Goddess Saraswati embodies knowledge and wisdom. The opportunity to worship both deities in one location offers a unique spiritual experience for visitors.

Beyond the temples, Agroha Dham features several attractions that captivate both devotees and tourists. A large pond named Shakti Sarovar is situated behind the temple complex, filled in 1988 with water from 41 rivers across the country. A beautiful depiction of the churning of the ocean is also located at its northwestern corner.

Visitors can enjoy displays of Lord Krishna’s leelas, Gajamukteshwar, and various religious scenes. A cave dedicated to Goddess Vaishno Devi is constructed about 15 feet underground, allowing devotees to also pay homage to Tirupati Balaji, Bhairavnath, Baba Amarnath, and Hanuman. The complex features a towering statue of Hanuman, standing at approximately 90 feet.

Every year, Agroha Dham hosts the Mahakumbh festival during Sharad Purnima, attracting a significant number of devotees from across the country who come to seek blessings from Goddess Mahalaxmi and Maharaja Agrasen. During this festival, the entire complex is filled with a vibrant, devotional atmosphere.
