Mumbai, August 2: Sunil Grover has become a household name in comedy, known for his unforgettable characters like Gutthi and Dr. Mashoor Gulati. His performances have brought joy to countless fans, but behind the laughter lies a story of perseverance. There was a time when he faced rejection and was replaced after just three days of shooting for a show, leading him to doubt his abilities. However, he turned this setback into motivation, ultimately carving a niche for himself in the comedy industry.
Born on August 3, 1977, in Mandi Dabwali, Haryana, Grover showed an early interest in acting and mimicry. His talent was recognized during school drama competitions, where he received praise from the chief guest for his unique skills. He later pursued a Master’s degree in Theatre from Punjab University, Chandigarh, where he caught the eye of renowned comedian Jaspal Bhatti, who offered him his first break in the television industry with the show “Full Tension” in 1995.
With dreams of becoming an actor, Grover moved to Mumbai, where he faced numerous challenges. Initially, he landed small roles and encountered frequent rejections. He revealed that in those early days, he earned only about 500 rupees a month, relying on savings and family support to pursue his dreams.
In an interview, Grover recounted a particularly tough moment when he was replaced after three days of shooting for a show. The lack of direct communication about his replacement left him disheartened, causing him to question his career path. Nevertheless, he persevered and continued to push forward.
Gradually, Grover expanded his career into television, radio, and films. He became popular on radio shows like “Hansi Ke Fuware,” where his voice resonated with audiences. His film debut came in 1998 with Ajay Devgn’s “Pyar To Hona Hi Tha,” followed by notable roles in films like “The Legend of Bhagat Singh,” “Main Hoon Na,” “Ghajini,” “Gabbar Is Back,” “Baaghi,” “Bharat,” “Goodbye,” and “Jawan.”
While often cast in supporting roles, Grover made each character memorable. His performances as Sampat in “Ghajini,” Vilayati Khan in “Bharat,” and the Iranian character in “Jawan” were particularly well-received.
In 2013, his role as Gutthi in “Comedy Nights with Kapil” changed his life, making him more recognizable than ever. He later portrayed Dr. Mashoor Gulati and Rinku Devi on “The Kapil Sharma Show,” characters that remain beloved by fans.
However, a fallout between Grover and Kapil Sharma in 2017 led to his departure from the show. Initially troubled by the media coverage, he eventually moved on. In 2024, the duo reunited for “The Great Indian Kapil Show.”
Beyond comedy, Grover has also showcased his talent in serious roles through web series like “Tandav,” “Sunflower,” and “United Kachhe.” His performances have garnered critical acclaim.
Grover has received multiple awards for his work, including a Special Mention Comic Icon award at the ITA Awards in 2018. Despite facing health challenges, including a heart attack and bypass surgery in 2022, he returned to work with renewed vigor.
