Sudden Snowfall Hits Kedarnath, Raising Concerns Ahead of Temple Opening

Rudraprayag, March 19: The weather has taken a sudden turn in Rudraprayag, located at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal region. Since morning, intermittent snowfall has been reported at the Kedarnath temple, raising concerns for local authorities.

This marks the third instance of snowfall in Kedarnath this week, known as the 11th Jyotirlinga. Such continuous snowfall in March is considered unusual, as the weather typically begins to clear up by this time. However, the cold persists, and temperatures in higher altitudes continue to drop.

Interestingly, while many parts of the country are seeking relief from rising temperatures, residents in Uttarakhand’s hilly areas are grappling with cold and snowfall. Continuous snow in the elevated regions of Rudraprayag could disrupt daily life.

The primary concern now is the opening of the Kedarnath temple gates on April 22. Every year, millions of devotees visit to pay their respects. If the adverse weather continues, it could hinder preparations for the pilgrimage. The administration faces the challenge of clearing roads promptly and ensuring all necessary arrangements are in place to avoid inconveniencing the devotees.

The snowfall impacts not only the pilgrimage but also the security personnel stationed there. Police and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) are currently deployed at Kedarnath, remaining vigilant despite the harsh weather conditions. These personnel are committed to fulfilling their duties diligently.

The administration is closely monitoring the situation. In light of the ongoing snowfall, assessments are being conducted, and strategies are being developed for the days ahead.
