Ranchi, August 14: The hunger strike by students protesting irregularities in the JPSC-JSSC competitive exams has entered its 21st day in Ranchi. Despite heavy rain late Thursday evening, hundreds of students remained steadfast at the protest site. Student leaders Devendra Nath Mahto and Umme Habiba have appealed to Chief Minister Hemant Soren to urgently address the students’ demands.
Both leaders emotionally urged the Chief Minister to engage in dialogue with the students and find solutions to their issues. Devendra Nath Mahto, who is currently hospitalized at Ranchi Sadar Hospital, continues his hunger strike into its 12th day. He was admitted after his health deteriorated during a sit-in at the assembly. Despite receiving medical treatment, he has refused to end his strike.
In his appeal to Chief Minister Soren, Devendra stated, “Sir, please listen to the students. Sit with them, understand their problems, and take prompt action.” He emphasized, “Whether I remain or not, democracy must prevail.”
Devendra made it clear that their struggle and hunger strike will continue until their demands are met. He asserted that this movement is not just his personal fight but a matter concerning the future and rights of a large number of students and youth.
He has once again requested the hospital management to allow him to return to the protest site at Jaipal Singh Stadium. Supporters of Devendra Mahto have also demanded his release from the hospital.
Meanwhile, fellow hunger striker Umme Habiba, who is also receiving treatment at Sadar Hospital, released a heartfelt video message appealing to the Chief Minister. She said, “We are in immense pain. We are all your children. Please listen to us. We believe that if you engage in conversation, a solution will emerge.”
Umme’s health had deteriorated while she was on hunger strike at Jaipal Singh Stadium, leading to her hospitalization earlier this week.
