Chennai, March 25: As the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) comes into effect for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, authorities have implemented strict controls on alcohol sales. All outlets are now under rigorous surveillance to prevent misuse.
These restrictions align with the Election Commission’s guidelines aimed at ensuring fair competition by curbing the use of alcohol to influence voters during the election period. Maintaining strict oversight throughout the election is a priority.
Officials have stated that under the revised rules, individuals are permitted to purchase alcohol only within a specified limit. Possession beyond this limit will be deemed illegal without valid justification.
The allowed limits include 4.5 liters of Indian Made Foreign Spirits (IMFS) or imported liquor, 7.8 liters of beer, and up to nine liters of wine. Enforcement teams have been tasked with monitoring compliance across the state. Clear directives have been issued to all retail outlets to adhere to these limits without exception.
According to officials, “Permitted quantities are strictly for personal consumption, and any violations will be dealt with according to the law.”
To enhance monitoring, all transactions at the state’s 4,787 Tasmac outlets will be digitally tracked through a centralized system operated from Chennai. This system will rely on mandatory billing and real-time data uploads to support monitoring efforts.
This action is expected to significantly curb the usual trend of bulk purchases, especially for private events and gatherings during the election period.
Authorities have clarified that such purchases will not be permitted under any circumstances. They have also warned that strict punitive measures, including legal action and license revocation, will be enforced against those who violate the established guidelines to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
