New Delhi, May 6: The Secretary (West) of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Siby George, met with the European Union’s Special Envoy for the Indo-Pacific, Maria Castillo Fernandez, on Wednesday in New Delhi. The discussion focused on enhancing the strategic partnership between the two parties.
The Ministry of External Affairs shared the meeting details on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Secretary (West) Siby George met with EU Special Envoy Maria Castillo Fernandez to discuss deepening the India-EU strategic partnership.”
Last month, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also met with Manfred Weber, the President of the European People’s Party and a Member of the European Parliament, in New Delhi. During that meeting, both leaders agreed on the need to maintain the positive momentum in India-EU relations and to expedite the approval of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Jaishankar expressed his satisfaction on ‘X’, saying, “It was a pleasure to meet with Manfred Weber, President of the European People’s Party and Member of the European Parliament, in Delhi today. We agreed on the importance of sustaining the positive momentum in India-EU relations and expediting the approval of the FTA.”
Earlier this year, trade talks between India and the European Union concluded with a significant Free Trade Agreement. These discussions were finalized on January 27 during the 16th India-EU Summit in New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and other leaders hailed it as a historic agreement.
In March, Jaishankar also met with a delegation of European Parliament members led by Angelika Niebler, where they discussed a new phase of India-EU relations and increasing cooperation.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the relationship between India and the European Union is based on shared values and principles, such as democracy, the rule of law, a rules-based international order, and multilateral cooperation. Their partnership spans various sectors, including trade, investment, climate change, science and technology, the digital realm, connectivity, and agriculture.
