New Delhi, September 18 (Daily Kiran) : Supta Virasana, a unique yoga pose, not only improves physical posture but also brings deep peace to the mind. Regular practice of this asana can enhance flexibility in the spine and hips while stretching the thigh muscles.
The term “Supta Virasana” combines two words: “Supta,” meaning lying down, and “Virasana,” which refers to the warrior pose. In this practice, one sits in Virasana and then reclines backward, allowing the body to experience a profound stretch and complete relaxation.
This asana is known for strengthening the digestive system and providing relief from tired legs and back pain. It also promotes mental tranquility. The Ministry of Ayush recognizes Supta Virasana as an important yoga pose, often referred to in some regional texts as “Supta Vajrasana.” It serves as an excellent restorative practice that replenishes both energy and mental peace.
Additionally, Supta Virasana stretches the abdominal muscles, aiding digestion and alleviating issues like constipation. It opens the chest and heart center (Anahata Chakra), facilitating deeper breathing and reducing stress and depression. This pose is particularly effective for relieving leg fatigue after prolonged standing, walking, or cycling.
The best time to practice Supta Virasana is 15-20 minutes after lunch or dinner, as it helps streamline the digestive process. If you feel comfortable, it’s beneficial to incorporate this pose into your routine.
However, individuals with severe pain or injuries in the knees, ankles, or lower back should avoid this asana. Pregnant women are advised to consult their doctor before attempting it.
