London, July 30: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has appointed former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as the new head coach of the England Test team. Joe Root has been named the captain of the Test side.
Fleming takes over from his former teammate and New Zealand captain Brendan McCullum, who resigned after England’s 2-1 series defeat at home against New Zealand.
Fleming will officially begin his tenure following the upcoming Test series against Pakistan. During this series, Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim head coach. Fleming will assume the head coach role during England’s Test tour of South Africa.
Although Fleming has not coached at the international level, he has achieved significant success in league cricket. He has led Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles and has guided the team to ten IPL finals. Fleming has also coached teams associated with the CSK franchise in South Africa and the USA. Additionally, he has been the coach of Melbourne Stars in the BBL and Southern Brave in The Hundred. After the conclusion of IPL 2026, Fleming stepped away from his responsibilities with CSK and its associated franchises.
In an official statement from the ECB, Fleming expressed his excitement about joining England as the Test coach. “This is one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket. I am proud to be appointed to this role,” he said.
He added, “There is a wealth of young talent in and around the team. Our goal is to help them showcase their potential as world-class cricketers.”
Fleming also shared his enthusiasm about working with Root, calling him “a generational talent,” and highlighted Harry Brook as a vital part of the team.
“I am particularly looking forward to working with Joe Root as captain—a generational talent who has already achieved so much. There is still much more to come from him. I am excited to support him so he can enjoy this role and progress, which is different from his previous tenure,” Fleming stated.
He expressed eagerness to work with Brook, noting that the best players are never fully prepared. “Helping Harry develop his extraordinary talent and leadership will be a crucial part of this journey,” he added.
After being appointed captain, Root expressed his honor at receiving another opportunity to lead England. “Test captaincy is a challenging yet rewarding role, and after gaining some experience working with Brendan McCullum last month, I am excited to guide this next generation of players,” he said.
Root further remarked, “Having the chance to do this alongside Stephen is also very inspiring. He has proven over time to be an exceptional leader with a deep understanding of the game.”
Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, supported Fleming’s appointment, emphasizing the team’s potential for sustained success. “Stephen Fleming is one of the most respected figures in cricket. We are fortunate to have someone of his caliber ready to take on the challenge of becoming England Men’s Test head coach,” Key stated.
