Seoul, May 9: The South Korean Coast Guard reported on Saturday that they seized two Chinese fishing boats. The vessels were allegedly violating maritime border regulations by fishing in South Korean waters. Both boats were apprehended near the border island of Baengnyeong in the Yellow Sea.
According to the Coast Guard, the two boats crossed the Northern Limit Line, entering South Korean waters about three kilometers illegally around 8 PM on Friday night. They were captured approximately 14.8 kilometers northwest of the island.
During the operation, one sailor suffered a heart attack. The Yonhap News Agency reported that the 40-year-old Chinese national received CPR while being transported to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately, he could not be saved.
Crew members indicated that the deceased sailor had consumed a significant amount of alcohol.
Officials have informed the Chinese consulate about the sailor’s death and are currently interrogating the remaining crew members.
Last month, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced that new laws would impose stricter penalties for illegal fishing by foreign vessels in South Korean waters. Under these revised regulations, fines for unlicensed ships operating in the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) will increase from 300 million won to 1.5 billion won (approximately 1 million USD).
President Lee Jae-myung recently instructed the Coast Guard to take stringent action against illegal fishing activities in South Korean waters, known as the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). He emphasized that strict measures should be enforced against Chinese boats entering South Korea’s EEZ in the Yellow Sea for unlawful activities.
