South Korea and Australia to Discuss Key Issues Amid Middle East Crisis

Seoul, April 27: The South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Monday that top diplomats from South Korea and Australia will engage in discussions this week on several critical issues. These discussions will focus on enhancing defense cooperation and addressing supply chain instability amid the ongoing Middle East crisis.

In a press release, the ministry stated that Foreign Minister Park Jin will meet with his Australian counterpart, Penny Wong, for bilateral talks in Seoul on Thursday. Both sides are expected to reaffirm their commitment to collaborating on current Middle Eastern conditions and the global energy crisis.

The talks will also cover efforts to deepen cooperation in the defense and defense industry sectors.

According to Yonhap News Agency, this meeting comes nearly a month after both top diplomats spoke over the phone on March 16. Prior to this, on April 23, South Korea’s special envoy met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Tehran.

A Telegram post from Iran’s Foreign Ministry indicated that Chung Byung-ha, the special envoy from South Korea, expressed hope that diplomatic efforts would lead to an end to the conflict and bring peace and stability to the region.

Chung emphasized the importance of establishing bilateral relations between Seoul and Tehran. Echoing Chung’s sentiments, Araghchi expressed Iran’s willingness to cooperate in this regard.

The Telegram post also noted that Araghchi defended Iran’s decision to block the Strait of Hormuz, stating it was a measure to protect national security and interests. He asserted that any consequences would fall on the attacking parties.

It is important to note that due to ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States, 26 vessels and 173 South Korean crew members are currently stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.
