Sony Xperia 1 VIII Unveils New Design with Square Camera Island

Mumbai, April 20: Sony’s upcoming flagship, the Xperia 1 VIII, has begun to surface in leaks, showcasing a significant design evolution. Recent detailed renders have emerged online, offering an early glimpse of what Sony may unveil in May.

The most notable change is the camera module. For years, Sony has utilized a narrow vertical strip design, but these new images reveal a square-shaped camera island. This module houses the triple cameras and flash, aligning more closely with current trends among other smartphone brands. This design contrasts with earlier renders that resembled the OnePlus 10 Pro, where the camera island seamlessly integrated into the middle frame.

Reactions to the new design are mixed. Some users appreciate the larger camera island, while others feel it detracts from the classic Xperia identity, which was easily recognizable. Although the new design is appealing, it may not stand out as much as its predecessor. The renders also indicate several color options, including purple, olive green, and black.

On the camera front, the changes appear straightforward. The Xperia 1 VIII is anticipated to feature a triple 48MP camera setup, including a telephoto lens. The previous model upgraded the main and ultra-wide sensors to 48MP but retained a 12MP telephoto lens, making this upgrade a logical progression rather than a surprise.

Sony seems committed to retaining features that are becoming increasingly rare in this segment. The microSD card slot and 3.5mm headphone jack are expected to remain, which will likely appeal more to existing Xperia users than to new buyers.

As with all leaks, the final design may differ slightly. However, these renders provide a solid indication of the direction Sony is heading. If the typical timeline is followed, we won’t have to wait long to see the complete picture.
