Sony has officially unveiled the WH-1000XM6, the latest addition to its critically acclaimed 1000X series of wireless noise-canceling headphones. The XM6 promises substantial upgrades in sound quality, noise cancellation, and comfort, all at a new price tag of $450, making it the most premium model in the lineup yet.

Studio-Grade Audio Enhancements
The WH-1000XM6 has been tuned in collaboration with a host of renowned audio mastering engineers including Randy Merrill, Chris Genringer, Mike Piacentini, and Michael Romanowski. Sony claims the headphones now deliver “studio-level accuracy”, allowing listeners to experience music as intended by artists.
Under the hood, the XM6 features a 30mm carbon fiber composite driver with a reengineered voice coil structure. A new advanced noise shaper enhances the digital-to-analog conversion by anticipating and reducing quantization noise in real-time. Supported audio codecs include SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3, alongside DSEE Extreme upscaling and 360 Reality Audio with a new Cinema Upmix mode for spatial audio from stereo sources.
Intelligent and Powerful Noise Cancellation
Sony has made significant improvements to Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) with the introduction of the QN3 HD Noise Canceling Processor, claimed to be 7x faster than the QN1 used in the previous XM5. Paired with 12 built-in microphones, the XM6 uses a next-gen Adaptive NC Optimizer that dynamically adjusts to environmental noise in real time. The Auto Ambient Sound feature also sees enhancements for better situational awareness when needed.
Better Call Quality with AI-Powered Microphones
For users who rely on their headphones for calls and meetings, the XM6 incorporates AI-assisted beamforming microphones that isolate the user’s voice from background noise more effectively than before — a welcome upgrade for both hybrid workers and commuters.
Refined Comfort and Foldable Design
Sony has also made thoughtful design tweaks, including a wider, more ergonomic headband, asymmetrical design cues for intuitive left/right orientation, and foldable earcups, reintroducing a popular feature from earlier 1000X models. The headphones will be available in Black, Platinum Silver, and a new Midnight Blue color option, all with matte finishes. A new magnetic-latch carry case rounds out the refreshed design package.
Price and Availability
At $450, the WH-1000XM6 comes in at a $50 premium over its predecessor, the XM5 — continuing Sony’s trend of incremental pricing. For budget-conscious buyers, the XM5 is now available for $350, while the XM4 has dropped to $300.
Sony is positioning the XM6 as the gold standard in consumer ANC headphones, offering audiophile-grade tuning, advanced AI integration, and smarter features for everyday use.
