
Tokyo, August 20: Smoke was spotted near the engine of a Malaysia Airlines aircraft at Narita Airport, located near Japan’s capital, Tokyo, on Thursday morning. Following this incident, the relevant runway was closed for inspection, as reported by the public broadcaster NHK.
According to NHK, the fire department received a report around 10:40 AM local time about black smoke emanating from the aircraft’s engine.
Police sources indicated that the aircraft was a passenger flight from Malaysia Airlines, which was taxiing for takeoff when an issue arose with its engine, leading to the cancellation of the flight.
News agency Xinhua reported that NHK stated there were a total of 160 people on board, including passengers and crew members. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries.
Narita Airport authorities confirmed that Runway ‘A’ has been closed for investigation following the incident.
Video footage shown by NHK depicted the aircraft stationary on the runway around 11 AM, surrounded by several fire engines and ambulances, with staff actively managing the situation. Officials have stated that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the incident.
In a separate incident on the same day, four workers conducting track repairs at a railway station in Tochigi Prefecture were struck by an express train, as reported by NHK.
The fire department indicated that all four workers were transported to the hospital, where they were found unconscious upon arrival.
Police and fire department teams are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident as well, with further details awaited.
