New Delhi, May 28: In today’s fast-paced world, many individuals compromise their sleep due to work and stress. While some dismiss sleep deprivation as normal, experts warn that this habit can be detrimental to health. Insufficient sleep negatively impacts both the body and mind, leading to fatigue, irritability, stress, obesity, and an increased risk of serious illnesses.
Health specialists emphasize that quality sleep is a crucial component of a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, getting enough sleep daily is as vital as proper nutrition and exercise. According to the National Health Mission (NHM), chronic sleep deprivation adversely affects both mental and physical well-being.
So, why is adequate sleep essential? Health experts explain that sleep is not merely rest; it is the foundation of a healthy life. Quality sleep allows the body’s cells to repair, boosts immunity, refreshes the mind, and maintains energy levels throughout the day. It is recommended to aim for at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night.
Lack of sleep has a direct impact on health. Initially, it leads to persistent fatigue and sluggishness throughout the day, diminishing work capacity and increasing stress. Prolonged sleep deprivation can cause uncontrolled weight gain as it affects hormones that regulate hunger.
According to NHM, insufficient sleep raises the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Blood pressure can become uncontrolled, and heart rhythms may be affected. The risk of diabetes also significantly increases. Additionally, sleep deprivation affects skin health, leading to wrinkles, dark circles, and a tired appearance. Mental health is also compromised, with irritability, depression, anxiety, and memory issues becoming common.
To achieve better sleep, establish a consistent sleep schedule, avoid screens (mobile, TV) before bed, engage in light exercise (but not right before sleeping), keep dinner light, and sleep in a quiet, dark room. If you consistently struggle with sleep or feel fatigued, it is essential to consult a doctor.
