New Delhi, March 20: The arrest of six Ukrainian citizens has been confirmed as a legal matter by Indian authorities. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that government agencies are currently investigating the case.
During a weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal mentioned that India has received a request from the Ukrainian embassy for consular access for the detained individuals.
When asked about Ukraine’s statement, Jaiswal responded, “You are all aware of this case, and we are also informed. As you know, this is a legal matter, and the relevant agencies of the Indian government are currently investigating it. We have indeed received a request for consular access, which will be addressed in accordance with the applicable legal requirements.”
It is noteworthy that an American citizen and six Ukrainians have been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). A special NIA court in Delhi has remanded them to 11 days of custody.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian embassy in India has alleged that the detention of its citizens is politically motivated and orchestrated. The embassy denied any claims that the Ukrainian state supports terrorist activities.
The embassy stated, “The publicly available information regarding the detention of the six Ukrainian citizens, including media reports suggesting that this action was initiated based on information from the Russian side, raises serious concerns. The circumstances of this case appear to be potentially orchestrated and politically motivated.”
The Ukrainian embassy firmly rejected any allegations linking Ukraine to terrorist activities, emphasizing that Ukraine faces the consequences of Russian aggression daily. Therefore, it adopts a principled and stringent stance against all forms of terrorism.
Additionally, the embassy expressed readiness for active cooperation between Ukrainian and Indian authorities, particularly based on the existing bilateral treaty concerning mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, which provides for comprehensive measures of cooperation and contact.
According to the statement, Ukraine expects Indian officials to ensure the legitimacy, transparency, and openness of the process, while also respecting the rights of the detained Ukrainian citizens in accordance with international law standards and principles.
