New Delhi, March 15: Shubman Gill, the captain of Team India in both ODI and Test formats, has been honored with the Polly Umrigar Award by the BCCI. At the Naman Awards, Gill was recognized as the Best Men’s International Cricketer for the 2024-25 season. His performance in 2025 was outstanding.
In 2025, Gill played 9 Test matches, scoring 983 runs in 16 innings at an impressive average of 70. He achieved 5 centuries and 1 half-century in the longest format of the game. During a five-match Test series in England, he amassed 754 runs, becoming the highest-scoring captain for India in a Test series on English soil. His achievements included four centuries and one double century.
Gill also excelled in the ODI format, scoring 490 runs in 11 matches at an average of 49. He hit 2 centuries and 2 half-centuries in ODI cricket last year. Under Gill’s captaincy, the Indian team claimed the Champions Trophy title after 12 years, defeating New Zealand in the final. In this tournament, he scored 188 runs in 5 matches at an average of 47.
However, Gill’s performance in the T20 format was disappointing. He was unable to secure a place in the T20 World Cup 2026 squad due to a lackluster showing in the 2025 Asia Cup, where he managed only 127 runs in 7 matches at an average of 21. In 15 T20 matches played that year, he scored just 291 runs at an average of 24 and a strike rate of 137, without any centuries or half-centuries.
As both a captain and a batsman, Shubman Gill is now setting his sights on the ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027.
