Shreyas Iyer Set for India Return, Sanjay Bangar Advises Caution Ahead of NZ ODI Series

New Delhi: Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has urged Shreyas Iyer to exercise caution and avoid rushing while making his comeback in the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. Bangar highlighted the importance of a steady start rather than trying to make an immediate impact in the first match.

Shreyas Iyer had suffered a splenic injury while attempting a catch during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 25. The injury involved internal bleeding that required hospitalisation and a minor surgery. After a period away from competitive cricket, Iyer is now preparing to return to international cricket.

Iyer recently demonstrated his fitness and form by scoring 82 and 45 runs respectively in the Vijay Hazare Trophy representing Mumbai.

Speaking on JioStar, Sanjay Bangar said, “One risk is that you may get impatient, wanting to start well and contribute immediately. Shreyas Iyer needs to be mindful of this. However, he has made a strong comeback and is performing well in domestic cricket. He understands the nuances of ODI cricket very well.”

Bangar further added, “Shreyas has been playing international cricket for years. Since 2023, his performances in the World Cup, especially his dominance against spin bowling, have been impressive. His skills will be very valuable. In the previous series, Gaikwad was given the No. 4 spot to play spin, but now Iyer is returning to reclaim that position, and his strengths will be fully utilised.”

The former cricketer also noted the positive developments in India’s batting lineup, saying, “High-performing batsmen like Shreyas Iyer are coming back to the team, and KL Rahul is consistently performing in a different role. There are many positives in the batting department. From India’s perspective, playing at home means spin bowling can once again become a major strength, particularly in the middle overs.”

As Team India prepares to face New Zealand, experts believe Iyer’s return will add depth and experience to the batting order, while his careful approach could be key to sustained success in the series.
