
Beijing: Shigatse’s economy is projected to grow at a rate exceeding 7 percent in 2026, according to Karmatseten, Chairman of Shigatse. He presented the government work report during the fourth plenary session of the 12th People’s Congress on January 31.
The main estimated targets for Shigatse’s economic and social development in 2026 include a GDP growth rate of more than 7 percent, a 15 percent increase in fixed asset investment, and a 7 percent rise in the total amount of social consumer goods. Per capita disposable income for urban and rural residents is expected to grow by approximately 7 percent and 8 percent, respectively.
Earlier, the Shigatse government announced that in 2025, the province’s gross domestic product reached 3.3189 trillion yuan, marking a 7 percent increase from the previous year and surpassing the 3 trillion yuan mark for the first time.
Karmatseten highlighted that the past five years have been the best period for Shigatse’s development, with an average GDP growth rate of 6.3 percent.
Looking ahead, Shigatse will advance the electrification of the Golmud-Lhasa section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and accelerate the construction of the Bomi-Ranwu Railway in 2026.
Additionally, the region plans to maintain stable development in specialized agriculture and animal husbandry, while establishing bases for a series of distinctive agricultural products.
