Mumbai, August 19: Playback singer Shan has carved a unique niche in the Indian music scene with his melodious voice and diverse songs. However, there was a time when he doubted his ability to establish himself in this field. He felt he was the weakest link in a family of talented musicians, which initially deterred him from pursuing a career in singing.
In a candid conversation on film trade expert Komal Nahata’s podcast, “Game Changers: The Music Series,” Shan opened up about his early days and musical journey. He shared that his father was a musician and an excellent singer, while his grandfather, mother, and sister also had remarkable singing talents. Despite growing up in such a musical environment, he believed his singing was inferior compared to his family members.
“I was the weakest link in my family when it came to music. My father was a talented musician and singer, and my grandfather, mother, and sister were also good singers. Honestly, I always felt that I was the weakest in terms of music in my family,” Shan expressed.
He added, “During my upbringing, I had a rebellious mindset. I wanted to pursue journalism and advertising, which diverted my attention. Singing came to me naturally, and I never received any formal training.”
Shan further explained, “People often believe that singing talent is inherited, but I don’t see it that way. I consider it a matter of conditioning. The environment in which a child grows up significantly impacts their talent. Growing up in a home filled with music gradually nurtured my singing abilities.”
Living in Mumbai and having parents who were singers provided Shan with numerous opportunities to perform at a young age. However, he turned down many of these chances initially, as he was not ready to embrace singing as a career. Eventually, due to the continuous opportunities that came his way, he accepted his path in music.
He also mentioned that his mother was a chorus singer, and many in the music industry were familiar with his father. When they discovered that Shan and his sister could sing, they were given opportunities to perform in advertisements at a very young age.
