Kulgam, August 5: On the anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 and 35A in Jammu and Kashmir, many young residents of Kulgam district expressed their support for the decision. They noted significant changes in peace, security, and development in the region. Previously marked by frequent strikes and unrest, the area is now witnessing a boost in education, employment, tourism, and infrastructure development.
Basit Dar, a local resident, shared that the removal of Article 370 has truly connected Jammu and Kashmir with the mainstream of the country. He recalled how strikes often led to the closure of schools, colleges, government offices, and markets. Public life was severely affected by protests and unrest, but now the situation has dramatically improved. After years, Muharram processions have resumed, cinemas have reopened, and, importantly, women’s safety has seen a notable enhancement. Women now roam the streets at night without fear, reflecting the changed atmosphere.
He claimed that incidents of stone-pelting and strikes have nearly vanished in Kulgam and surrounding areas. Markets stay open late into the night, with shops in areas like Hospital Road operating until 1 AM, showcasing a clear increase in peace and economic activity. Basit referred to August 5 as a “historic day” and called for celebrations.
Fahim from Kulgam stated that the anniversary of the abrogation is a significant day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir and India as a whole. This decision has provided Jammu and Kashmir with opportunities similar to those in other states. Previously, the unique status limited many rights and benefits, but now youths are gaining new opportunities in education, sports, employment, and other sectors. Positive changes such as tourism development, road construction, and improvements in education are evident. The youth of the region no longer wish to return to the era of unrest and violence. Past incidents of violence and grenade attacks have impacted many young lives, and the new generation aims to move forward on the path of peace and development. Currently, Kashmir enjoys a peaceful environment, and the youth hope to maintain this atmosphere.
Shabbir Ahmed remarked that the removal of Article 370 is not just a political decision but a significant historical event. He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, noting that many stalled development projects in Jammu and Kashmir have been completed since the decision. There has been rapid expansion of bridges, medical institutions, colleges, and other infrastructure projects. Since 2019, continuous improvements have been observed in industries, infrastructure, and other sectors, with even better results expected in the future. Article 370 did not provide any real benefits to the common people, and now the region is progressing on a new path of development.
In response to some political parties observing August 5 as a “Black Day,” Shabbir stated that this day symbolizes joy and the beginning of a new era for Jammu and Kashmir. He accused previous political parties of allowing prolonged unrest in the region, while now the focus is on development and stability. He added that many people in Jammu and Kashmir, including Kulgam, now desire the continuity of peace, development, and good governance.
