Washington, 23 August (Kiran News): Sergio Gor, currently serving as Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, has been appointed as the next US Ambassador to India. US President Donald Trump, counting Gor among his most trusted aides, has also nominated him as the Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. Gor will become the 26th US Ambassador to India, with this key appointment coming amid ongoing tariff tensions between the two nations.
Announcing the decision on social media platform Truth Social, President Trump wrote that he is appointing Sergio Gor as the next Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asia. Expressing his confidence, Trump stated that Sergio is the right person to carry forward the “Make America Great Again” mission.
Reacting to the appointment, Gor thanked President Trump in a post on social media platform X, saying, “Representing the United States of America will be the greatest honor of my life! Our White House has achieved historic accomplishments in making America great again.”
Sergio Gor will succeed Eric Garcetti, who served as US Ambassador to India until January this year. The position has remained vacant for the past seven months. Gor will continue in his current role until his appointment is confirmed by the US Senate.
A close confidant of Trump, Gor has published two books in support of the former President and managed one of the largest Super PACs backing Trump’s campaigns. Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Gor moved to the United States with his family at the age of 12.
Trump’s announcement comes at a time when US-India relations are under strain, particularly due to rising trade tensions. The Trump administration has already imposed an additional 25% tariff on certain Indian products, with plans to increase it to 50% starting 27 August.
