Kolkata, August 8: A school headmaster was shot dead by unidentified assailants in broad daylight in the North Dinajpur district of West Bengal on Saturday. The victim, Nazrul Islam, was attacked while heading to work in the Madaripur area.
After being shot, he was rushed to the Islamapur Sub-Divisional Hospital and later transferred to a larger facility in Siliguri. Despite the doctors’ efforts, he succumbed to his injuries around 1 PM.
The Islamapur police have launched a detailed investigation into the incident. They are reviewing CCTV footage from the area in search of clues. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the motive behind the murder remains unclear.
Expressing shock over the incident, the victim’s daughter, Naina Khatun, stated that the family is bewildered as to why he was targeted. “My father was an honest man. He had no enemies. We do not understand why he was killed,” she said.
The deceased headmaster’s wife, Rukhsana Khatun, informed the media that her husband was on the phone with her when he was shot. “After the incident, he told me he had been shot. However, he could not tell me who shot him,” she recounted.
Colleagues and fellow teachers also expressed their disbelief at the murder, describing Nazrul Islam as a dedicated and punctual educator with no personal vendettas.
Eyewitnesses reported that the headmaster, who had no known ties to any political party, was on his way to school when he was intercepted by the assailants in the Madaripur area, who opened fire multiple times, resulting in one bullet striking him and causing him to fall on the road.
