Sanya to Host Asian Beach Games Torch Relay on March 30

Sanya, March 24: The torch relay for the sixth Asian Beach Games 2026 will take place on March 30, as announced by the organizers on Monday. The games, scheduled from April 22 to April 30, will feature 14 sports, 15 disciplines, and 62 events, with approximately 1,790 athletes participating. The opening ceremony is set for April 22 at the Sanya Asian Beach Games Park.

Wang Guoping, the deputy director of the organizing committee, stated that the torch relay will showcase the beauty of the city’s beaches and its vibrant sports culture. He remarked, “The torch relay will highlight the unique allure of beach sports through elements like sunshine, coastline, and sandy beaches.”

According to the organizers, national and regional Olympic committees from 45 countries and regions have registered for the event. As of March 20, following a qualification review, the number of registered athletes stood at 1,790.

The sixth Asian Beach Games 2026 will include 14 sports, 15 disciplines, and 62 events. The women’s beach football competition has been canceled due to a low number of participating teams, while all other events will proceed as planned.

Based on participant numbers, the top five sports include beach handball, dragon boat racing, beach athletics, jiu-jitsu, and beach volleyball. Beach handball will see the highest participation, with 237 athletes. In terms of delegation size, the top five participating teams are Thailand, China, the Philippines, India, and Hong Kong-China.

Li Haigang, the deputy secretary-general of the organizing committee, mentioned that the competition schedule and event timelines have been optimized and will be released soon. He added, “To assist media and audiences in planning their viewing schedules, detailed timing information for the events will be clarified.”

Meanwhile, operational teams at all competition venues have completed several rounds of training, tabletop exercises, and test events. Li stated, “In 30 days, athletes, coaches, and officials from across Asia will gather in Sanya to compete amidst its blue seas and sandy shores. We are leaving no stone unturned in our preparations to provide a high-quality competitive environment and to host outstanding games.”
