Sanjay Nirupam Criticizes Marathi Language Requirement for Auto Drivers in Maharashtra

Mumbai, April 24: The mandatory implementation of the Marathi language for auto and cab drivers in Maharashtra has sparked a new debate in the state’s political landscape. Sanjay Nirupam, a spokesperson for the Shiv Sena party, stated that while they support the promotion of the Marathi language, it is crucial that any such policy does not impose undue pressure on the poor and marginalized sections of society.

In an interview, Nirupam emphasized that the positions of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena on this issue are largely aligned. He reiterated that their party is not against promoting Marathi but insists that the implementation of such policies should not adversely affect the economically weaker groups.

Nirupam raised a pertinent question: why is the expectation to speak Marathi placed solely on auto and taxi drivers, while no such requirement seems to exist for individuals working in the corporate sector? He pointed out that large companies do not impose similar conditions on their employees. He believes it is unjust to target the poorer segments of society and referenced the ideology of Balasaheb Thackeray in this context.

Lawyer Gunaratna Sadavarte criticized this decision, claiming it contradicts the Constitution of India, the Motor Vehicle Act, and Maharashtra’s own regulations. He warned that there would be opposition to this ruling and that legal action would be pursued if any auto driver faces injustice.

Sadavarte also questioned Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, suggesting he should reflect on whether there is an ulterior motive behind this issue.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut supported the use of Marathi, arguing that there is nothing wrong with it. He contended that just as Tamil is spoken in Tamil Nadu, Bengali in West Bengal, and Hindi in northern cities, Marathi should also be respected in Maharashtra. If a law is enacted regarding this matter, everyone, especially those earning a livelihood in the state, should adhere to it.

On the other hand, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena leader Sandeep Deshpande took a firm stance, asserting that no union can hold Mumbai hostage by claiming they will not speak Marathi. He stated that those unwilling to comply should return to their native places for work. Respecting the local language is essential in every state, whether it be Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, or Gujarat. It is expected that anyone conducting business in a state learns and respects its language.
