New Delhi, April 5: The Indian women’s tennis team is ready to wave the tricolor at the upcoming Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group (I) event. Legendary tennis player Sania Mirza has urged the team to give their all in the tournament.
India is set to host the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup (BJKC) Asia/Oceania Group (I) event from April 7 to 11 at the DLTA Stadium in New Delhi. Ahead of the tournament’s opening match, Sania Mirza shared a special message of support for the team.
The three-time Grand Slam champion stated, “Best of luck to the Indian team for the Billie Jean King Cup. The tournament starts in just a few days, and representing our wonderful country is the greatest pride and honor. I hope all of you girls perform well, give your best, and put in your 100%. We are all praying for you.”
Often referred to as the Women’s Tennis World Cup, this tournament will feature six countries competing in a round-robin format, with the top two teams earning promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup playoffs scheduled for November 2026.
In addition to host India, the other teams participating in the Asia/Oceania Group (I) include Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand, and Thailand.
India enters this competition aiming to build on the momentum from last year’s Billie Jean King Cup Asia and Oceania Group I qualifiers, where they achieved impressive results by defeating Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and the Republic of Korea 2-1.
This year, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Mongolia are also in the mix, so India will strive to secure a top-2 finish to keep their hopes of reaching the World Group alive. As the team progresses toward the qualifiers, the focus remains on performance and taking a crucial step towards returning to the World Group for the third time.
The Asia/Oceania Group I event is part of the fourth tier of the Gainbridge Billie Jean King Cup, with regional Group I competitions taking place simultaneously in Europe/Africa and the Americas.
A total of seven teams from regional Group I events worldwide will advance to the playoffs, where they will face the seven losing teams from the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers. The tournament will follow a single round-robin format, with all teams competing against each other over five days.
The Indian team comprises Ankita Raina, Sahaja Yamalapalli, Vaishnavi Adkar, Shrivalli Bhamidipati, Rutuja Bhosale, and Vaidehi Chaudhari.
