Amsterdam, June 25: Ryan Cook has resigned from his position as the head coach of the Netherlands men’s cricket team, effective immediately. The Royal Dutch Cricket Association (KNCB) made the official announcement on Thursday. Cook’s decision marks the end of a successful four-year tenure, during which he played a pivotal role in elevating Netherlands cricket to new heights.
Cook stepped down at a time when the Netherlands team is in excellent form. Currently, they hold the third position in the Cricket World Cup League-2 standings with 32 points from 28 matches, making them strong contenders for upcoming major tournaments.
The former South African cricketer cited family reasons as the primary motivation for his resignation. Recently, he welcomed his second child and believes that the role of head coach demands constant travel and full-time commitment. He expressed a desire to spend more time with his family at this juncture.
According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, batting coach Hino Kuhn has been appointed as the interim head coach. He will oversee the team during the upcoming Cricket World Cup League-2 matches while KNCB begins the search for a permanent coach. In his farewell message, Cook stated that coaching the Netherlands men’s cricket team has been one of the most memorable experiences of his career. He expressed pride in contributing to the team’s professional growth and the development of a strong culture.
Cook, 41, took charge of the team in May 2022. Under his leadership, the Netherlands achieved several significant milestones, including qualifying for major ICC tournaments and securing memorable victories against formidable nations. One of the highlights of Cook’s tenure was the team’s qualification for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where they surprised everyone by defeating teams like Zimbabwe and South Africa in Australia.
The team also performed admirably in the 2023 ODI World Cup, marking their first appearance in the tournament since 2011. They achieved remarkable upsets against strong teams such as South Africa and Bangladesh. KNCB CEO Huub van Walsem praised Cook, noting that his contributions extended beyond the national team. He played a crucial role in nurturing a new generation of players, strengthening the coaching framework, and promoting grassroots cricket development.
Netherlands captain Scott Edwards also lauded Cook’s contributions, stating that he fostered a strong culture within the team over the past four years. Edwards emphasized that Cook provided players with the confidence to express themselves freely, leading to numerous memorable successes and laying a solid foundation for the future.
