New Delhi, August 17: A missile strike by Russia on the ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih steel plant, owned by Indian industrialist Lakshmi Mittal, has resulted in two fatalities and left 14 employees injured. The attack has severely damaged several critical production units, leading to a partial halt in operations at the plant.
Reports indicate that this assault targeted Ukraine’s largest steel plant, located in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. This region has frequently been a target during the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but the latest strike is expected to have a significant impact on industrial activities.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih released a statement confirming that the missile attack caused damage to essential facilities related to power generation and blast furnace operations. According to the company, the damage to these key units has disrupted production processes, necessitating a partial shutdown of the plant.
The company stated, “As a result of the attack, major production facilities in the energy generation and blast furnace sectors have been damaged, leading to a partial halt in the plant’s production processes.”
This incident comes at a time when long-range attacks have intensified between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have recently conducted large-scale drone strikes targeting energy, industrial, and military infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused the Russian military of persistently targeting civilian and industrial structures. He claimed that over the past week, Russia has launched more than 1,550 attack drones, approximately 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles on various Ukrainian cities.
On the other hand, reports indicate that the Russian Defense Ministry stated that the metallurgical plant in Kryvyi Rih and some military-industrial establishments in Kyiv were among its targets. Russia also claimed to have shot down 822 drones launched by Ukraine.
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is one of Ukraine’s most vital industrial assets and is part of the global steel company ArcelorMittal, playing a crucial role in Ukraine’s steel production and export. Therefore, damage to power and blast furnace facilities could severely affect production capacity.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has also intensified its drone attacks within Russia. The ongoing conflict between the two countries is increasingly impacting energy facilities, industries, and strategic infrastructures, raising concerns about the broader implications for regional economic activities.
