New Delhi: Russia has denied allegations that its recent missile strike in Ukraine caused damage to the Qatar embassy in Kyiv. The claim was made by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, who stated that the embassy was affected during Russia’s hypersonic missile attack.
In response, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement rejecting these accusations. It said Ukrainian sources were spreading false reports about damage to the Qatar diplomatic mission on January 9. The ministry emphasized that the Russian military has never targeted any diplomatic missions.
The statement further clarified that there were no military or strategic targets near the Qatar embassy. It suggested that any damage to the embassy building might have resulted from a malfunction in the Ukrainian air defence system. Russia also described Qatar as a friend and a key partner.
According to a report by Caspian Post cited by Ukrainian media, Foreign Minister Sybiha condemned the attack as a clear violation of the Vienna Convention, denouncing Russia’s aggression without limits. Ukraine expressed full support to Qatar in managing the damage and appealed to Gulf countries to respond through public and diplomatic channels.
On the night of January 8, Russia launched a hypersonic Orlan missile strike near the NATO-member Poland border in western Ukraine. This marked the first use of the Orlan missile in over a year during the ongoing conflict.
Although Russia did not confirm specific targets of the missile strike, its Defence Ministry stated that a major attack was carried out using high-precision, long-range weapons, including the Orlan mobile medium-range ground-based missile system.
Earlier, Russia had claimed that Ukraine attempted to attack President Vladimir Putin’s residence, a claim that Ukraine firmly denied. Russia later said the recent missile strike was in response to Ukraine’s alleged attack attempt on the Russian President’s home last month.
