
Mumbai, May 8: Russia’s air defense forces successfully intercepted at least 37 drones heading towards Moscow on Friday, as confirmed by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin.
Sobyanin reported via the messaging platform Telegram that emergency services are currently operating in areas where drone debris has fallen.
Earlier in the day, Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that between 7 AM and 2 PM, air defense systems shot down a total of 145 Ukrainian drones across various regions.
On Thursday, Moscow experienced one of the largest drone attacks of the year, with 61 drones reportedly downed throughout the day, according to the TASS news agency.
Additionally, Russia’s Ministry of Transport announced that a Ukrainian drone strike targeted the administrative building of the southern Russia air navigation branch, disrupting operations at 13 airports in the region.
The ministry noted that the regional air traffic control center in Rostov-on-Don, which manages southern Russia’s air traffic, implemented temporary operational changes following the attack. All personnel are reported safe, and specialists are assessing the situation with equipment.
The Ministry of Transport and the Federal Air Transport Agency are coordinating with airlines and airports to adjust flight schedules and air traffic management.
Meanwhile, both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of continuing attacks despite a ceasefire agreement.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated on Telegram that the Ukrainian military has violated the ceasefire over 1,300 times, including drone and artillery strikes in border areas. The ministry claimed that Russia has also retaliated.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russian forces continued their assaults along the front lines overnight, launching hundreds of drone attacks. He indicated that Ukraine would respond in kind.
Zelensky posted on X that by 7 AM local time, Russia had conducted over 140 attacks on Ukrainian positions, including ten major strikes.
On Monday, Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced a ceasefire for Friday and Saturday in honor of Victory Day, a commemoration of World War II. Zelensky had previously stated that Ukraine would implement a ceasefire with Russia starting Wednesday.
