Roshan Seth: From Hollywood to Bollywood, Celebrating a Legacy of Versatile Acting

Mumbai, April 1: After reigning over Hindi cinema, many actors seek global recognition in Hollywood. However, one Indian-British actor chose to leave Hollywood behind to carve out his identity in India. We are talking about Roshan Seth, who gained fame for portraying Jawaharlal Nehru.

The actor will celebrate his 84th birthday on April 2. Born in Patna, Bihar, Roshan Seth had no idea that he would one day become a prominent figure in both Hollywood and Bollywood. His mother was Anglo-Muslim, while his father was Hindu. Born before the partition of India, his father was a biochemistry professor at Patna Medical College and aspired to send Roshan abroad for higher education. Roshan completed his early education at Doon School and later pursued further studies at St. Stephen’s College. In 1965, he trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, honing his craft.

During his time abroad, he participated in numerous theater productions, which laid the foundation for his acting career. However, growing weary of playing the same roles, he decided to return to India after 1970, initially working as a journalist.

In 1980, Roshan made a comeback in India with the film “Gandhi,” where he portrayed Jawaharlal Nehru. His performance was so natural that he received a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor, although he missed the award ceremony. The film itself won an Oscar, and following “Gandhi,” Roshan gained recognition in Hindi cinema, appearing in several films back-to-back.

In 1998, he reprised his role as Jawaharlal Nehru in “Bharat Ek Khoj.” He also featured in international films like “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” “My Beautiful Laundrette,” and “Street Fighter,” before starring in popular Indian films such as “Ek Tha Tiger,” “Guru,” “Monsoon Wedding,” “Such: A Long Journey,” and “Bombay Boys.” In 2021, he appeared in the Netflix series “Behind Her Eyes,” playing a psychological doctor. Since then, he has been absent from the screen.
