New Delhi, May 18: Indian wrestler Deepak Punia has made a name for himself on the global stage with his remarkable talent. Having represented India at the Commonwealth Games 2020, his journey is truly inspirational.
Born on May 19, 1999, in the town of Chhara, Jhajjar, Haryana, Deepak grew up in a wrestling environment. His father, Subhash, was a wrestler himself, serving as Deepak’s first mentor.
At just five years old, Deepak was introduced to the akhada (wrestling arena) by his father. A lover of milk, Deepak surprised everyone with his strength, winning cash prizes in various wrestling competitions.
During a school-level meet, a coach from Chhatrasal Stadium recognized Deepak’s talent. Although wrestling on synthetic mats posed challenges for him, he refused to let it become a weakness.
In 2016, Deepak clinched gold at the Junior Asian Wrestling Championship, followed by another gold at the World Cadet Championship. He continued to shine, winning gold again at the Asian Junior Championship in 2018 and securing silver at the World Junior Championship that same year. In 2019, he became the first Indian to win the Junior World Championship since 2001.
Deepak reached the bronze medal match in the men’s 86 kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics but faced defeat against San Marino’s Myles Amin. In April 2024, he was disqualified from the Asian Olympic Qualifier in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, due to flight delays caused by heavy rain in Dubai, which prevented him from reporting on time for weigh-in. He attempted to secure an Olympic ticket through the World Qualifying Tournament in May 2024 but was unsuccessful.
In the Asian Championships of 2021 and 2022, Deepak earned silver medals. He also won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022, along with three silver and two bronze medals at the Asian Championships.
Emerging from a modest background, Deepak Punia has become a role model for countless Indian youth through hard work, discipline, and perseverance. From becoming a Junior World Champion to winning medals at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games, he has demonstrated that dedication and confidence can turn dreams into reality.
