Kolkata, January 29 – The brutal rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, 2024, shook the entire state of West Bengal. Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the victim’s parents have stated that although political parties have offered them chances to contest polls, their priority remains justice.
Speaking to the media in Kolkata, the victim’s parents claimed that several political parties have approached them to enter electoral politics. The victim’s mother said, “From the beginning, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) reached out with offers to join politics along with financial support, but we did not agree to any of these proposals.”
She added, “We want justice from the government. We are not ready to contest elections yet, so we do not want to comment on this matter at present.”
The victim’s father also told reporters, “Parties like TMC, CPI(M), and BJP have all offered us an opportunity to fight in the next Assembly polls. We are not politicians; we only want justice for our daughter. Therefore, we see no need to enter politics.”
He further stated, “We will support whichever party helps us get justice. We may join that party, but currently, we have no plans to contest elections. Our fight is solely for justice, and this should not be politicised.” The father also mentioned that they declined an offer made by BJP leader Shubhendu Adhikari.
The Kolkata Police initially investigated the case, which was later supported by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI concluded that Sanjay Ray was solely responsible for the crime. Subsequently, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment. However, the victim’s family remains dissatisfied with the verdict, stating that the truth has not fully emerged and many questions remain unanswered.
This case has raised serious concerns not only about law and order but has also stirred political debates across West Bengal.
