New Delhi, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : Practicing yoga regularly is essential for maintaining both physical health and mental tranquility, especially in today’s fast-paced world. Among various yoga poses, Paschimottanasana, or the seated forward bend, is particularly beneficial. This asana not only increases flexibility but also improves digestion.
The term ‘Paschimottanasana’ derives from Sanskrit, where ‘Paschim’ means the back of the body and ‘Uttana’ refers to stretching. In this pose, individuals bend forward while seated, stretching the muscles of the back and legs.
By performing this asana, practitioners positively impact the entire spine, abdominal organs, and nerves. It is recognized as one of the twelve fundamental poses in Hatha Yoga. The “Hatha Yoga Pradipika,” a key text in yoga, emphasizes the importance of Paschimottanasana, stating that it helps channel prana (energy) into the sushumna nadi and enhances digestive fire (agni).
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Paschimottanasana is extremely beneficial for the spine, digestive system, and mental peace. Regular practice can enhance respiratory capacity, strengthening the lungs. This asana is particularly advantageous for individuals with diabetes, as it aids in controlling blood sugar levels. Additionally, it can alleviate issues related to the liver and kidneys.
Paschimottanasana is also effective in relieving menstrual disorders. It improves blood circulation in the lower abdomen and helps reduce pain. By maintaining hormonal balance, this pose can alleviate problems such as irregular periods, excessive bleeding, or fatigue.
However, individuals with severe back pain, slipped discs, or serious spinal injuries should avoid this pose. Pregnant women should also refrain from practicing this asana, as it exerts pressure on the abdomen.
