New Delhi, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : In today’s fast-paced world, prolonged sitting and poor dietary habits often lead to stiffness in the shoulders, back, and hips. Gomukhasana, or Cow Face Pose, serves as a remedy by enhancing flexibility and promoting mental tranquility. Regular practice not only alleviates physical tension but also improves concentration and balance.
The name “Gomukhasana” derives from two Sanskrit words—‘Gau’ meaning cow and ‘Mukha’ meaning face. This pose mimics the shape of a cow’s face, with the thighs and calves resembling its features: wider at the back and narrower at the front. Practitioners must sit upright to perform this pose effectively.
While Gomukhasana is relatively easy, beginners are advised to practice under expert supervision. According to the Ministry of AYUSH, this seated yoga asana is highly effective. The posture opens the chest, enhancing respiratory health and increasing lung capacity.
This asana is particularly beneficial for asthma patients, as it improves lung function and facilitates easier breathing. Diabetics are also encouraged to practice Gomukhasana, as it positively impacts internal organs, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and improves digestion. Additionally, it contributes to heart health by reducing stress, thereby alleviating pressure on the heart and stabilizing blood pressure.
Pregnant women should avoid this pose unless advised by a specialist. Individuals with severe injuries or chronic pain in the shoulders, neck, knees, or hips should refrain from practicing Gomukhasana.
