Bengaluru, March 28: The first match of IPL 2026 took place on Saturday at the M. Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium, featuring Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Expectations were high for SRH’s opening batsmen, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, but both failed to deliver a strong performance.
After losing the toss, Sunrisers Hyderabad batted first, hoping for explosive innings from Sharma and Head. Unfortunately, both batsmen struggled significantly. Abhishek Sharma faced 8 balls, scoring only 7 runs before being dismissed. Similarly, Travis Head managed to score 11 runs off 9 balls, hitting 2 boundaries, but his performance was disappointing.
Head’s struggles at the crease are not new; he had a lackluster season last year as well. Abhishek’s recent form has also been concerning. During the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026, he scored just 141 runs in 8 matches, indicating his ongoing struggles. Nitish Kumar Reddy was promoted to number four but could only muster 1 run off 6 balls.
In this IPL 2026 opener, RCB’s captain, Rajat Patidar, won the toss and opted to bowl first. New Zealand fast bowler Jacob Duffy made his IPL debut for RCB after being acquired for 2 crore rupees in the auction. Additionally, Abhinandan Singh also played his first match in the Indian Premier League.
RCB ended an 18-year title drought last season, clinching the IPL 2025 championship under Rajat’s captaincy. The team performed impressively, defeating Punjab Kings in the final. In contrast, Sunrisers Hyderabad failed to secure a playoff spot last season.
