Bengaluru, March 28: The IPL 2026 season is set to kick off with the opening match featuring the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. RCB will be captained by Rajat Patidar, while Ishan Kishan will lead SRH.
In a heartfelt gesture, RCB players will wear black armbands during the match to honor fans who tragically lost their lives in a stampede outside the stadium after the team’s historic title win last year.
An official statement from RCB noted, “Royal Challengers Bengaluru will pay tribute to the eleven members of the RCB family who tragically lost their lives in the unfortunate incident on June 4.”
To further commemorate this loss, players will don practice jerseys featuring the number 11 during warm-ups, followed by the black armbands during the match. Additionally, eleven seats at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium will remain vacant as a permanent tribute to the loyal fans whose support will forever be part of the RCB family.
The stampede resulted in eleven fatalities and numerous injuries during the victory celebrations last year.
In other news, RCB’s coach Andy Flower expressed confidence in Virat Kohli, stating he is “incredibly hungry” and at the “peak of his powers” as the team prepares to defend their title. Kohli, who has retired from Test and T20 formats, now focuses solely on the 50-over game for India.
“Virat is in a really good space mentally,” Flower remarked. “He’s very comfortable with himself but still incredibly hungry. Watching him strike the ball in training, he looks at the peak of his powers.”
Flower acknowledged the emotional weight of the previous season, saying, “It was very satisfying professionally for everyone, but a really emotional time for all sorts of reasons at the end of last season. It’s another time, so it’s time to move on from that.”
