Mumbai, December 2: Actor Ranveer Singh, who is busy promoting his upcoming film ‘Dhurandhar’, has found himself in the midst of a controversy after his remarks about the superhit film ‘Kantara’ at the International Film Festival of India in Goa. While praising Rishab Shetty’s blockbuster film, Singh made comments that have led to accusations of blasphemy against him.

Seeing the growing controversy, Ranveer Singh clarified his stance on Monday through Instagram Stories and apologised, writing, “My intention was to highlight Rishab’s tremendous performance in the film. Every actor knows how much time it would take to perform that particular scene the way he did, for which I have great admiration.”

Ranveer further wrote, “I have always respected my country’s culture, traditions and beliefs with great reverence. If I have hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise from my heart.”

At the Goa Film Festival stage, Ranveer Singh was in conversation with Kantara star Rishab Shetty. He mentioned watching ‘Kantara: Chapter One’ in theatres and expressed his appreciation for Rishab’s performance. During this interaction, while referring to the Chamunda Devi (divine power) scene in the film, he called her a ‘female ghost’ and even mimicked the scene. He was also seen repeating the same scene while coming down from the stage, which Rishab Shetty reportedly asked him not to do.

After videos surfaced on social media, widespread outrage was witnessed across the country, including Karnataka. Chamunda Devi is worshipped throughout South India as well as across the entire country. People termed Ranveer’s behaviour as disrespectful to the deity and expressed their anger.

Users called Singh’s actions an insult to faith and demanded an apology from him.
